As described on this website, there are a few steps you will need to undertake to be able to register and work as a GP in the NHS.

Here’s a brief summary to help you understand the initial steps.

Register for the scheme

• Apply for the I&R Scheme as soon as you know you want to join or need advice about it. Information about the scheme can be found on this website or you can go straight to application form here.

Renew your GMC registrations and obtain licences

• Qualified GPs with previous GP experience will need to renew their GMC registration and licence for the scheme too.
• If you have qualified outside the UK you will need to contact the GMC for Registration of your EU qualifications or if outside the EU (CEGPR) and you will also require a Licence to practice as a GP. There is a lot of paperwork so please read through their site carefully.

We’ll start assessing your learning needs

Once your registration for the I&R Scheme has been processed, your details will be passed to an I&R lead in the area you intend to practise. They will arrange an appointment to review your previous training and experience and advise on the next steps. This appointment can be done face-to-face, or by phone or Skype if you are living overseas. You will also be given a dedicated account manager to help guide you through the I&R process. Once you’ve been accepted onto the scheme the I&R lead will guide you through the learning needs assessment outlined in the diagram below.

Apply for inclusion on the Medical Performers List

To practice as a NHS GP in England you have to be on the National Medical Performers List (NMPL). If you are returning to practice after two years or more, or if you have not practiced as a NHS GP before, you have to complete the I&R scheme to be included on the NMPL. There is now one NHS England team, based in Liverpool, to help you manage your initial application for the NMPL. Once you have completed all the assessments required, your NMPL registration will be passed to the local NHS England team.
